3 day/2 night Uluguru Mountains Hike
Located 4.5 hours from Dar, the Uluguru Mountains form part of the massive Eastern Arc mountain chain and play host to a range of endemic bird and reptile species. Our hike will take us up from the agricultural hub of Morogoro through the forest and into the heart of this ancient range. We will summit Mt Bondwa and refresh ourselves in a hidden waterfall before descending off the range and heading back to Dar. For our intrepid explorers, you can forgo private transport and take the bus out to Morogoro with your group and guide for significant savings!
This tour is the real deal, we will meet early at the Slow Leopard in Dar es Salaam and be taken by taxi to the local bus station for our bus to Morogoro. Your bus has been booked in advance and your guide will ensure everyone gets a comfy seat. Ubungo bus terminal in the early morning is a true Tanzanian experience although your guide will make it as easy and comfortable as possible. It’s around 5 hours to Morogoro from Dar so sit back and watch the landscape unfold around you.
We will have lunch en route and begin our hike from the city of Morogoro, our destination for the day is Morningside an old German settlement nestled in the Uluguru Mountains. It’ around three hours of walking to reach Morningside and we will stop often for snacks and photos. Porters are included to carry the heavy camping equipment and kitchenware leaving you guys free to enjoy the walk as much as possible
Upon arriving in Morningside (pictured to the right) we will set up camp and get stuck into some dinner, remember to chip in and help out when you can, it always tastes better that way. After dinner, it will be time to hit the hay and get ready for a big next day.
Rise and shine, today we are summiting Mt Bondwa, no need to pack up the camp we will be returning this way tonight. First on the agenda though we have a mountain to climb! It will take anywhere between 3-4 hours to hike to the top of Mt Bondwa and another 2 hours to return. There is no rush and plenty of daylight though so climb slowly and soak it up.
The summit of Mt Bondwa commands impressive views back down the valley and across Morogoro town and is the perfect place to put your wobbly legs up and have some lunch for before the descent. As you descend keep your eyes peeled for fresh berries growing by the trail, remember though, be sure to ask your guide which ones are safe to eat.
We will return to Morningside for dinner and a couple of well deserved beers/glasses of wine!
Today we will wake up to a hot breakfast before descending back to Morogoro, the walk should only take a couple of hours and we will have lunch in Morogoro before catching our bus back to the Dar. At the bus station in Dar es Salaam there will be transport waiting to take us back to the Slow Leopard for some serious R&R. Karibu tena!
